Whilst kind-hearted Jackie Gibson has spent years raising funds for the Derian House Children’s Hospice, she couldn’t resist a challenge to knit 1000 chicks, each containing a chocolate crème egg, to raise £1000 for this worthy cause.
As Jackie neared her target, she had been given eggs by various friends, but was still 800 short, so decided to ask the Rotary Club of Leigh to help out. They readily agreed to support this project and their President David Jones said, “We were really ‘eggcited’ about this request, as we could see that the amount we spent on crème eggs would be trebled in value when the chicks are sold for £1 each, providing a significant donation to Derian House. All the credit should go to Jackie for her initiative and hard work.”
Lots of friends have helped with the supply of wool, ribbons and other materials and Jackie has used any spare time, whether at home or travelling on buses or trains, to get those knitting needles into action, often attracting donations from curious strangers! Her grandson once talked her into taking him to the cinema to see a film that didn’t interest her, but said, “You don’t have to watch the film – you can knit your chicks with your eyes closed!”
Jackie will be selling chicks at IKEA on 1st and 2nd April and any groups, clubs, or Churches who want to sell batches of chicks should contact Jackie via the Leigh Rotary Facebook or website: https://www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/homepage.php?ClubID=295
