BOROUGH residents are invited to a Volunteers Open Day to find out more about the opportunities available at Wigan and Leigh Hospice.
The Open Day takes place at the hospice’s Woodview Centre on Tuesday, February 20th, when anyone interested in finding out about the roles available and what is required is invited to attend.
Staff and current volunteers will be available to talk about a range of roles available including reception work, volunteering in hospice shops, for a companionship service in patients’ homes and supporting the Inpatient Unit.
Rose Davis, manages the Hospice In Your Home team which needs volunteers for the companionship service. She said: “We began our companionship service almost 3 years ago and many patients have found meeting and talking to volunteers to be a great source of comfort to them. We are at the point now where more and more patients are requesting this service but we don’t have enough volunteers for them all. If anyone is interested I would urge them to come to the Open Day to find out more about what the role entails and how very rewarding it is.”
Anna Hart, Retail Manager, said: “The hospice needs to raise £8,700 every day and the shops – which are run entirely by volunteers – make a huge contribution towards achieving that.
“By volunteering our volunteers have found that they grow in confidence, meet new people, learn new skills and get a great sense of satisfaction from helping their local community.
“I would urge anyone who wants to find out more about volunteering for the hospice to come to our Open Day or contact us on 01942 525566.”
The Volunteers Open Day takes place between 10am and 3pm at the Woodview Centre, Wigan and Leigh Hospice, Kildare Street, Hindley.
