Focus on heart failure at hospice conference

EXPERTS in the field of heart failure will speak at a conference hosted by Wigan and Leigh Hospice in May 2018.

At the heart of the matter – palliative care and heart failure’ will explore how hospitals, community services and hospices care for patients with heart failure who need palliative and end of life care.

Speakers at the one-day conference to be held at Leigh Sports Village include Professor Miriam Johnson, Professor of Palliative Medicine at the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre based at the University of Hull and Dr Markus Schichtel, Clinical Researcher at the University of Oxford.
Dr Sanjay Arya, a Consultant Cardiologist and Medical Director and Liz Price-Jones, Lead Consultant Psychologist, both from Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Foundation Trust complete the line-up of speakers.
Heart failure and palliative care was chosen as the focus for the conference following a report from Hospice UK and the British Heart Foundation, in collaboration with the Wolfson Palliative Care Research Centre, published earlier this year which revealed that too few people with advanced heart failure in the UK are being referred for specialist care provided by hospitals and hospices.
Sarah Owens, Palliative Care Education Lead for Wigan and Leigh Hospice, said: “Many thousands of heart failure patients are missing out on palliative care so we felt it was important to examine how this can be improved.
“Some of our aims at the conference are to explore how hospices, hospitals and community services working together can result in a better patient experience and to look at, not just how valuable it is to have discussions with heart failure patients about their future care, but when the right time is to have these discussions.”
Sarah OwensThe conference will be beneficial for professionals working in specialist palliative care, and those working in cardiac teams, health and social care services including hospital staff, GPs and community teams, doctors, nurses, social workers and counsellors.
‘At the heart of the matter – palliative care and heart failure’ takes place on May 11th, 2018 at Leigh Sports Village, Leigh.
An early bird fee of £90 is available if booked and paid before 31st January 2018. A standard fee of £120 will apply to all bookings made after this date.
